MARGULYAN LEV MARKOVICH
junior sergeant, participant of the Second World War Hero of the Soviet Union (October 17, 1943)
He was born on March 17, 1903 in the village of Staraya Kotelnya (now Andrushevsky district of Zhytomyr region of Ukraine) in a peasant family. Nationality – Jewish. He graduated from a village school.
In January 1943 he was drafted into the Red Army by the Department of Defense of Yukori-Chirchik district of Tashkent region.
From August 1943, he served in World War II. He fought on the Voronezh and Central Fronts. He gained experience in the 60th Army of the Central Front, the 280th Rifle Division, and the Engineer Platoon of the 1031st Rifle Regiment. At that time, Soviet troops, under the command of Lieutenant General Chernyakhovsky, had recaptured Glukhov and entered Ukrainian territory. Lev Markovich was promoted to junior sergeant and appointed commander of a group of engineers.
On September 25, 1943, under enemy fire, near the village of Okuninovo in the Chernihiv region, L. Margulyan organized the passage of soldiers and military equipment across the Dnieper using boats and sails. He succeeds twice and dies the third time.
He was buried in the brotherhood grave in the village of Okuninovo. The area was evacuated to the village of Strakholesie in Kyiv Region before the floods in the Kiev Sea.
By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 17, 1943, Junior Sergeant Lev Markovich Margulyan (after death) was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union “For his heroism and courage in the battle of the Dnieper.”
