MASHKOV ALEXEY ZAKHAROVICH
colonel a participant in World War II Hero of the Soviet Union (10.29.1943)

   Born on June 20, 1921 in the village of Kulbakino, Smolensk region. Russian. In the 1920s, the family moved to Yartsevo. Alex studied at secondary school No. 1, joined the Komsomol. In 1939 he entered the Pyatigorsk Pedagogical Institute (Faculty of Physics and Mathematics). In autumn 1939 he was drafted into the army, sent to the artillery unit. In early June 1941, for the difference in military and political training received an officer rank.
   In 1942 he graduated from the courses “Vistrel” and in the same year came to the front.
   On September 20, 1943, commander of the artillery battery of the 899th artillery regiment (337th rifle division of the 40th army of the Voronezh Front), senior lieutenant Mashkov, despite the enemy’s fierce fire, was one of the first to cross the Dnieper River  and contributed with the fire of the battery  to hold and expanding the bridgehead, as well as covering the crossing (in the area of the village of Buchak, Kanevsky district, Cherkasy region of Ukraine).
   By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on October 29, 1943 “For exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown”, colonel Mashkov Alexei Zakharovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
   After the war, in 1945, he graduated from the Higher Officer Artillery School in Leningrad. In 1951 he graduated from the F.E.Dzerzhinsky Military Academy.
   Since July 1960, he served as an operational control officer of the General Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces.
   In 1981, resigned.
   He lived in Moscow. He died on September 27, 1996. He was buried at the Preobrazhensky cemetery.
