ILYIN STEPAN PETROVICH
senior sergeant, participant of the Second World War, Hero of the Soviet Union (30.10.1943)
He was born on August 2, 1915 in the village of Krivoozernoye. He graduated from the seventh grade of the school. In January 1942, Ilyin was drafted into the Red Army, and from April – participated in World War II. Until October 1943, Senior Sergeant Stepan Ilyin commanded the 99th Special Engineering Battalion of the 69th Shooter Division of the 65th Army of the Central Front. He fought valiantly in the Battle of the Dnieper.
On October 15, 1943, Ilyin and his unit crossed the Dnieper in the territory of the village of Loyev, Loyevsky district, Gomel region of the Byelorussian SSR, took an active part in the battles on its west coast, repulsed several German counter-attacks, as well as three the archer crosses the platoon across the river.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 30, 1943, Senior Sergeant Stepan Ilyin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union “For exemplary performance of combat duties, courage and heroism in the fight against German invaders.”
He died on November 2, 1993 and was buried in the Alley of Heroes of the Tashkent Military Cemetery.
