He was born on March 31, 1914 in the settlement of Selivanovsk region of the Don Army, now Milyutinsky district of the Rostov region, in a large peasant family. Ukrainian.
After graduation, he worked on a collective farm, then went to study at a construction school, became a bricklayer and built houses in Kamensk, Liski, Rostov. Then he entered the Agricultural Institute, where he graduated from two courses.
In the Red Army since 1935. On the Komsomol study permit, he was sent to the Stalingrad Aviation School, which he successfully graduated in 1938. He began serving in the 6th fighter squadron based in Rostov-on-Don. Since September 1939, the squadron became part of the 69th fighter aviation regiment forming in Odessa. After completing the courses, flight commanders were appointed flight commanders. By May 1940, his unit became one of the best in the regiment.
By September 1941, already in the 4th squadron of the 69th FAR, it completed 187 sorties, in 46 air battles personally shot down 3 and in the group – 2 enemy planes. In the spring and summer of 1942 near Kharkov and Stalingrad. He was shot down by the Germans, jumped with a parachute, fell under the tail of his aircraft, and with serious injuries he was hospitalized. After the hospital, in February 1943, he was appointed to the post of inspector of military schools of the Air Force of the Turkestan Military District. There he participated in the training of flight personnel for the front.
Since July 1943, Cherevatenko again at the front as an inspector for piloting techniques of the 273rd Fighter Division. In this position, he ended the war. In total, during the Second World War, he flew 286 sorties, of which 87 for attack aircraft, and participated in 68 air battles, in which he personally shot down 7 and in the group with his comrades – 9 enemy planes.
In the postwar years A.T. Cherevatenko continued to serve in the Air Force of the Soviet Army. In 1955 he graduated from the Air Force Academy. Since 1957, Colonel Cherevatenko is in stock. He lived in the city of Rostov-on-Don.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 10, 1942, senior lieutenant Alexey Tikhonovich Cherevatenko was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
He died on November 19, 1994, was buried in Rostov-on-Don.
