MATVEEV FEDOR IVANOVICH
sergeant, participant of the Second World War Hero of the Soviet Union (March 24, 1945)
He was born on December 30, 1923 in the village of Karasevo (now – Cherepanovsky district of Novosibirsk region). After graduating from the 7th grade, he lived in the Uzbek SSR and worked on the railway. In 1942, Matveev was drafted into the Red Army by the military commissariat of Kuva district of Fergana region.
From December of that year he participated in World War II. He was wounded in April 1943.
Until May 1944, Sergeant Fyodor Matveyev commanded the 51st Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front, the 263rd Rifle Division, and the 1st Machine Gun Company of the 997th Rifle Regiment. He worked hard to liberate Sevastopol. On the night of May 7-8, 1944, Matveyev’s unit occupied enemy trenches, passing through enemy barricades and minefields. He advanced and took part in the defeat of the German convoy, capturing 145 soldiers and officers, as well as capturing 8 wagons and 3 vehicles. In the battle for the height of Saharnaya Golovka, Matveyev’s unit captured the enemy with three wooden firing points. On May 9, 1944, he took an active part in the battles for the Ship Lands of Sevastopol. In that fight, Matveev is wounded, but he continues to fight.
By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, Sergeant Fedor Matveyev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union “For exemplary performance, courage and heroism in the fight against Nazi invaders on the front.”
He died on April 12, 1976 and was buried in the Military Cemetery in Tashkent.
