ABILAY ALIMBETOV

Sergeant, Participant of World War II, The Hero of the Soviet Union (October 30, 1943)

Alimbetov Abilay was born on March 20, 1921 in Kyzylkum district in a poor peasant family. He was Kazakh. He had secondary education.
He was drafted into the Red Army in January 1942 and had been a participant of World War II since that year.
Sergeant Alimbetov fought valiantly on October 15, 1943, crossing the Dnieper River near the urban-type village of Radul in the Repkinsky District of the Chernihiv Region of the Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine). He crossed the river and invades the enemy’s trenches with the troops entrusted to him. Alimbetov replaced the platoon commander who was killed during the fighting on the right bank of the Dnieper. Under his command, the platoon repulsed five enemy counterattacks and held the captured line.
By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 30, 1943, “For his courage and heroism in successfully crossing the Dnieper River and firmly settling on the platform on the west bank of the river”, Sergeant Alimbetov Ablay was awarded the title of “The Hero of the Soviet Union”.
At the end of the war, Alimbetov Ablay continued to serve in the army. He graduated from the Leningrad Military-Political School, then the Military-Political Academy named after V.I.Lenin.
Colonel Alimbetov Ablay served as chairman of the DOSAAF committees in the Kyzyl-Orda, Toldi-Kurgan and Gurev regions of the Kazakh SSR.
He died on September 23, 1973.
