MAKAROV PETR FEDOROVICH
lieutenant, World War II veteran, Hero of the Soviet Union (October 1, 1944)

   He was born on November 7, 1922 in the village of Goryupino, Kardimovsky district, Smolensk region. In 1935 he moved to the village of Vorotishino in Yarsevo district, graduated from the 7^th grade and worked on a collective farm. In the Red Army from July 1941. In 1942 he graduated from the Riga Infantry School. From May of that year, he served in World War II.
   By November 1943, he was a company commander in the 520^th Regiment of the 167^th Rifle Division of the 38^th Army of the 1^st Ukrainian Front. He worked hard to liberate Kiev. On November 3, 1943, the company broke through the enemy’s defenses and began to advance. In repulsing the enemy’s counterattack, he destroys several tanks and forces the infantry to retreat, liberating the Children’s Sanatorium village. On November 4, in the Pushcha-Voditsa area, when the route was stopped by an enemy machine gun, Makarov secretly approached it and destroyed it with a grenade, injuring himself in the leg. Pushchi-Voditsa will be hospitalized only after his full release.
   By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 10, 1944, Lieutenant Makarov Petr Fedorovich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union “For exemplary performance of the command’s combat missions, courage and heroism in the fight against the Nazi invaders on the front”.
   After the war he continued his service in the Soviet Army. He was released from the reserve in 1976 with the rank of colonel. He lived and worked in Tashkent.
   He died on April 20, 2006.
