KARPOV IVAN PETROVICH
Sergeant of Guard, Participant of World War II, The Hero of the Soviet Union (September 13, 1944)

He was born in 1913 in the village of Yelkhovka (now Orenburg region, Totsk district). After graduating from the 6^th grade, he worked on a collective farm and then as a factory mechanic.

He served in the Red Army from 1941. He was the commander of machine guns’ account of the 60^th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 20^th Guards Rifle Division of the 37^th Army of the 3^rd Ukrainian Front. He was a participant of World War II. He worked hard to cross the Dniester River.

In April 1944, he was one of the first to cross the Dniester near the village of Slobodze (now a city in the Transnistrian Republic of Moldova). On the first day of the battle, he personally destroyed 5 enemy machine guns and more than 30 enemy soldiers and officers on bridgehead.

On April 13, near the village of Kopanka in the Kauseni district of the Moldavian SSR, 36 German soldiers and 1 officer were killed. He died in one of the next battles.

By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 13, 1944, “For exemplary performance of combat missions, courage and heroism in the fight against Nazi invaders on the front” Sergean Karpov Ivan was awarded the title of “The Hero of the Soviet Union” (after his death).
