KARABAYEV ELBAY

Corporal, Participant of World War II, The Hero of the Soviet Union (June 3, 1944)

He was born on May 15, 1917 in the village of Bakhrin, Ishtikhon district, Samarkand region, in a peasant family. He was Uzbek. He had an incomplete secondary education. He worked on a collective farm.
In 1941 he was drafted into the Red Army. During World War II, he was the commander of a special machine gun group of the 722^nd Rifle Regiment. On September 25, 1943, he was one of the first to cross the Dnieper River through the village of Pekari (Kanevsky District, Cherkasy Region).
On October 7, he killed a German officer in a hand-to-hand battle near the village of Studenets and seized valuable documents from him, fired a grenade, destroyed a machine-gun count, and sheltered his route across the river with machine gun fire.
By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 3, 1944, “For exemplary performance of combat duties, courage and heroism in the fight against Nazi invaders on the front”, Corporal Karabayev Elbay was awarded the title of “The Hero of the Soviet Union”.
